A Busy and Fun-Filled May at Unicorn Stables!
May was packed with horse shows, schooling adventures, clinics, trail rides, education, and lots of sunshine! We are so proud of all our riders, horses, coaches, and volunteers for making this such a positive and productive month at the barn. Here’s the highlights:
Island 22 schooling day
MREC Derby Weekend
Field turnout season returns
CVES dressage schooling show and trail riding
Cross-country schooling and hunter/jumper show at MREC
Working Equitation Clinic
Stable Management Lesson Series launch
Summer camp volunteer training day
May Horse of the Month
Island 22 Schooling Day
We kicked off the month with a spontaneous schooling trip to Island 22 Equestrian Park! Riders, horses, and even the dogs were all fantastic. It was a great opportunity to get out and school in a new environment, and enjoy a fun day together as a team
MREC Derby Weekend
Next up was an exciting weekend at MREC Derby! We started by getting everyone settled into stabling and enjoying some dressage schooling. The following day included dressage tests as well as schooling in the derby arena. It was a fantastic opportunity for horses and riders to have a look at the course before competition day.
Sunday brought some amazing derby rounds! We are incredibly proud of everyone for handling the heat so well during a very warm weekend. It was especially exciting to celebrate several first horse shows for new rider-and-horse partnerships.
Field Turnout Season Returns
With the lovely weather arriving, horses have officially returned to the fields! Aside from only a few missing shoes during the first few days, the horses have been thrilled to be back out on the grass.
We feel incredibly lucky to have the space to provide the turnout our horses need and enjoy so much.
CVES Dressage Schooling Show & Trail Riding Adventures
We took several groups out to Campbell Valley for the CVES Dressage Schooling Show. After the show and some lunch, riders headed out for a relaxing trail ride to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
At the same time, another group travelled to O’Brien Equestrian to make use of their lovely arena for jump schooling. We also had another group head back to CVES on Sunday for even more trail riding fun.
Overall, it was a wonderful weekend full of learning, riding, and enjoying time with the horses.
More MREC Fun!
Later in the month, we headed back to MREC for cross-country schooling and their hunter/jumper show.
It was so exciting to get back out onto the cross-country fields! There were many firsts throughout the weekend — first shows for some riders and first outings in a long time for others. Everyone showed great determination and teamwork.
Working Equitation Clinic
The Monday after the long weekend, we held another Working Equitation Clinic. Our Working Equitation team continues to show great improvement, and Coach Cass is incredibly proud of all their progress.
We also had several lesson clients join in the fun! To finish off the day, Coach Cass had the opportunity to ride the lovely Bella, owned by Brit, through a fun speed round.
Stable Management Lessons Begin
We are excited to announce the start of our Stable Management Lesson Series for all clients interested in learning more about horses and horsemanship.
Our first lesson focused on understanding the horse, including:
Structure and movement
Behaviour and communication
Conformation
Biomechanics
Equitation science principles
We are very much looking forward to continuing this educational series throughout the season.
Camp Training Day for Coaches & Volunteers
We also hosted a camp training day for our coaches and volunteers in preparation for summer camps!
The day began with an in-hand handling lesson for volunteers to help them build confidence and skills when working with more sensitive horses. We then moved into mock camp lessons where coaches practiced teaching and volunteers practiced being the best leaders that they can be.
The day was both educational and lots of fun, and we wrapped everything up with a pizza party to thank our amazing volunteers for all their hard work and dedication.
🐴 Horse of the Month - Welcome, Face!
While we usually take this space to celebrate a school horse, this month we’ve had a few new faces around the barn, so we thought it would be fun to switch it up by celebrating a new addition to our herd of Unicorns. We are excited to officially welcome a new horse to Unicorn Stables: Face!
Coach Tammie recently purchased Face, a 6-year-old Thoroughbred named after Face from The A-Team. He has a huge personality and has already become a wonderful addition to the barn. We are all looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this exciting new partnership.
Looking Ahead
As we head into summer, we are excited for more horse shows, clinics, camps, trail rides, and lots more learning opportunities. Thank you to all of our wonderful riders, families, volunteers, and horses for making Unicorn Stables such a special place.
We can’t wait to see what June brings! 🦄
